Mayamada At MCM Expo Recap
Nov 1st
This weekend saw our first appearance at the MCM Expo in East London. For those that don’t know about it, MCM is the biggest celebration of all things gaming sci-fi anime, manga, cosplay and general geekiness in the UK.
MCM is about the same as the New York Comic Con, but the cost of travel is much cheaper for us
We took the mayamada team down for three days of non stop standing on your feet, but it was so worth the lower back damage because we had an amazing time talking to loads of friendly and passionate people as well as make new friends and fans along the way.
Here are some of the best moments from the show…
We visited MCM in May but now that we had a stall we got to skip the lines.
Even though the area was massive, it didn’t take too long to find our spot.
Once we set up our stall we were off and running!

Mayamda Super Fun (and Only Slightly Damp) Picnic Time!
Aug 22nd
There are a few things we at mayamada learned over the weekend.
- Don’t trust British weather or weathermen.
- Touchscreen phones don’t work too well in a downpour.
- Good people will come through whatever the weather.
This past Saturday saw the first mayamada picnic this weekend, but it almost didn’t happen. It started off well when we got to the park and unpacked everything in the middle of Hyde Park…and then came the rain!
After getting very wet, buying a few emergency umbrellas, a shower curtain and deck chairs for an improvised tent…we decided that we couldn’t wait out the rain and found nearby cover.
But the great thing is people still turned up, and once the rain cleared we went from this….
To this.
A really great turn out considering the early downpour.
Of course, we had mayamada cupcakes on show again…
…and things turned out well in the end – high five!
For all the planning you do beforehand for an event, it’s highly likely things will not go to, well, plan. Don’t let that fact put you off planning though. Just remember to stay flexible and positive so when things go a little off the rails you can still have a good time – and we did! A big thanks to everyone that came down to make it a super fun time
Look our for more pictures on our Facebook page. If you were there on the day be sure to let us know what you though too.
Hot Lunch Photoshoot
Jul 31st
What a day! I always look forward to doing photoshoots for new tees as each one is something different and our photoshoot last week was no exception.
You’ve seen the story behind the show and the characters featured in the design…now we can tell you about the t-shirt itself.
The day stared off at a nice pub called the Lemon Tree. They were kind enough to let us take over the upstairs for hair and make up. The models Andrees and Riyonn were expertly made up…
…while the rest of us waited…
Think Long and Maintain Your High Standards
Jul 22nd
Last week I came to realise the importance of keeping high standards within your brand.
We were putting together a secret gift to give away soon (can’t say what yet, that part’s a surprise) and I got to see the “completed” work a couple weeks ago.
Why the quote marks? Well those weren’t actually my words as it was quite far off what I had in mind for the final product and arranged to have the job restarted.
We could have accepted it as it was – it wasn’t a complete disaster after all. But it wasn’t good enough to represent our brand so we had to wait the extra week to have them done again and done properly.
Patience is a virtue (I guess)
It was a shame as we wanted them in time for a promotional party we were invited to, so it was frustrating for me to wait and miss that date.
However, it’s so important to set high standards your brand and not allow yourself to dip below them. In truth, they should be raised over time – especially if you’re just starting out. We now have the finished product and they look exactly as we wanted.
Don’t rush to put things out before they are ready if the end result will be detrimental to your brand.
Though I don’t own any product with an ‘i’ in front, I do admire Apple’s no compromise adherence to the quality of their brand. More often than not they release a product when it is ready to wow people (not always the case ) and not a moment before.
Do it right, not quick
When it comes down to it this is your brand and you have to always ask yourself: “am I comfortable giving this to someone, even for free?” In this case the answer was a clear “no” and that means that however frustrating waiting is, in the long run your brand will benefit if you continue to maintain high standards.
Keep in mind high doesn’t mean perfect – very few things are, but you have to be comfortable having that item – whether it’s t-shirts, stickers, badges, hoodies or your website – represent your brand. If it’s a bad product, that’s your brand so make sure that whatever you’re giving to customers and fans is good enough to represent that.
Have you had any similar experiences? Let us know what you think in the comments or on our Facebook page.
By the way, that special gift? We’ll be handing them out at our picnic next month
